The concept (operator-attested, 2026-09-25)
"The rig is that arrangement of habitual environments to create a collection of recursive feedback loops that helps you attain a flow state … always a humanoid thing in terms of anthropomorphized environmental arrangements."
What the evidence supports
- Flow is the purpose, not the product. Nakamura & Csikszentmihalyi separate flow's antecedents (clear goals, immediate feedback, challenge–skill balance) from its phenomenology. An arrangement can supply only the antecedents. Flow claims must name their instrument (ESM, FSS).
- "Nearly autonomous" = automaticity. Schneider & Shiffrin 1977; habits are cued by context (Wood & Neal 2007); automaticity plateaus at a median of 66 days (Lally 2010). "Muscle memory" is really automatized procedure, or chunking.
- Distributed intelligences. Kirsh 1995: space simplifies choice, perception and computation. Hutchins 1995: speed bugs are the cockpit's memory. Clark & Chalmers 1998 give the glue-and-trust criteria. Adams & Aizawa contest that coupling amounts to constitution, so the house asserts coupling only.
- The humanoid clause. Iriki 1996 and Maravita & Iriki 2004 show tools entering the body schema within minutes, in macaque neurons. This is unshown for non-reaching cognitive tools such as corkboards, slip-boxes or IDEs, and it is the open debt (invariant I3).
- Belief. Self-efficacy is supported (Bandura 1977). The lucky-charm effect (Damisch 2010) failed replication (Calin-Jageman & Caldwell 2014).
- Unpacked workplaces: Bacon (7,000+ items, surveyed at x/y), Luhmann (22,079 + 51,636 cards, which is 73,715 and not the quoted ~90,000; unresolved), Freud's facing antiquities, Caro's 22-ft corkboard, Nabokov's cards, and Edison's notebooks. An inventory is evidence of arrangement, never of flow.
- Four families plus one: engineered information architecture, habitual habitat, minimal ritual set, ensemble, and prepared environment.
House artifacts (modeled, implemented, tested; not deployed)
- ontology/rig: 24 types, 7 relators, 13 cases (10 claimed, 3 candidate), and 10 SHACL axioms (A1 indexed, A2 humanoid, A3 responsive, A4 recursive, A5 instrumented flow, A6 inventory ≠ flow, A7 glue and trust, A8 grounded invariants). Measured: 0 violations and 6 deliberate warnings; tests 43/43 with Tier B.
- Lexicon SET 10: rig has three senses. The theory sense is exactMatch to rg:Rig.
- Oracle: sci.the-rig; capability beacon ontology.the-rig.

Open questions
Peripersonal remapping for cognitive tools; a latency threshold for flow; how rigs are inherited through apprenticeship; how to measure Montessori's polarization of attention; whether the house fleet is itself a rig (not asserted).
